Job Description

President and Chief Executive Officer

Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) is one of Ontario’s largest community-based health systems, serving one of Ontario's fastest-growing and most diverse communities. Formed through the voluntary integration of Grand River Hospital and St. Mary's General Hospital, WRHN provides a broad range of acute, specialized, regional, and community services across Waterloo Wellington and beyond. With approximately 900 beds and 8,500 staff,

physicians, and volunteers, an annual operating budget approaching $1 billion, and regional programs serving approximately 10% of Ontario’s population, WRHN is home to major regional programs in cancer, cardiac care, renal care, stroke, mental health and addictions, and other specialized services. As the organization continues to come together as One WRHN, it does so in a region distinguished by an exceptional academic, research, and technology ecosystem, creating opportunities to explore new approaches to care and health system improvement.

The Position

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will lead WRHN at a pivotal time in its evolution. The CEO will have meaningful opportunity to influence and shape the future of One WRHN, bringing people together around a shared culture, purpose, and vision for what the organization can become. They will inspire confidence and optimism while maintaining an unwavering focus on quality, patient-centred care, the experiences of patients and families, and the needs and well-being of the communities WRHN serves. Working closely with a talented leadership team, staff, and physicians, the CEO will bring the focus, judgement, and leadership required to realize WRHN’s considerable potential.

Externally, the CEO will be a visible and trusted leader for WRHN. They will champion the new hospital and broader multi-site redevelopment vision, strengthen relationships with government, healthcare, and community partners, and advance WRHN's role as a collaborative regional and provincial health system leader. The CEO will also build on WRHN’s academic, research, and innovation strengths, deepening its relationship with the University of Waterloo, and other academic partners, and drawing on the region's broader ecosystem to translate possibilities into meaningful improvements in care, access, workforce experience, and health system performance.

The Person

The successful candidate will be an accomplished healthcare executive with significant experience leading complex organizations through transformation, growth, and change. They will bring a sophisticated understanding of healthcare delivery and Ontario's publicly funded health system, together with strong business, financial, and operational acumen. Strategic, curious, and future-focused, they will be energized by the potential to do things differently, open to fresh ideas and meaningful partnerships, and willing to look beyond conventional approaches to healthcare. They will translate vision into progress, empower a strong leadership team, and draw on the expertise, creativity, and ideas of others. Authentic, compassionate, inclusive, and highly collaborative, they will listen well, build trust, and value diverse perspectives. Visible and approachable, they will invest time in WRHN's people and communities, bringing the emotional intelligence and empathy to understand their experiences and the ability to engage, energize, and bring people with them as WRHN continues to evolve.
