The Registered Nurse (RN) works collaboratively within an inter-professional team, providing a holistic approach (addressing bio, psycho, social, cultural, and spiritual needs), and comprehensive care for individuals, families, groups, populations and communities across the continuum of care. The RN independently provides safe, competent, compassionate, ethical nursing care to all patients with predictable and unpredictable outcomes and all levels of complexity, and ensures goals and needs are prioritized and individualized. Using nursing knowledge, critical thinking and clinical judgement, the RN engages in independent, interdependent and dependent functions to provide healthcare focusing on comprehensive assessment, patient/family education, and coordination of care. These functions may be self-determined, or assigned by physician or nurse practitioner, other RN or as part of team consultation and planning.
