Full time President CEO

Job Description

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is seeking its next President and Chief Executive Officer.

The appointment of the next President and Chief Executive Officer presents a rare opportunity to lead one of the country’s most distinguished academic health sciences centres at a time when clinical excellence, scientific discovery, system integration and organizational transformation must advance with equal conviction.

Sunnybrook is entering a defining chapter in its evolution, one that brings together an extraordinary legacy of service, a formidable record of clinical and academic achievement, and an increasingly influential role in shaping the future of health care in Ontario and Canada.

Nationally leading and globally recognized, Sunnybrook cares for approximately 1.2 million patients each year and brings together more than 17,000 staff, physicians, learners and volunteers across primary and community services, acute and specialized care, rehabilitation and post acute care. Internationally renowned in areas including trauma and burns, cancer, cardiovascular care, neurosciences, rehabilitation and precision diagnostics and therapeutics, Sunnybrook has earned an enduring reputation for bringing expertise, ingenuity and compassion to some of health care’s most complex challenges. Founded as a hospital for Canada’s Veterans, its legacy of service, courage and resilience continues to resonate throughout the institution and remains an important part of its character.

Looking ahead, Sunnybrook will operate within a health care environment of increasing complexity and constraint. Growing demand, workforce pressures, fiscal realities and significant infrastructure needs are converging with rapid advances in artificial intelligence, digital health and precision medicine, while expectations of leading hospitals increasingly extend beyond their traditional boundaries. Navigating such an environment will require a President and CEO who combines the discipline of an accomplished operator with the perspective and foresight of a system leader. Financial stewardship, political acuity and operational rigour will be essential, alongside the capacity to anticipate change and translate ambition into sustained performance.

Sunnybrook’s influence will also be defined increasingly by what it accomplishes with and through others. Excellence in highly specialized care remains fundamental, even as the organization strengthens its role in primary, community and integrated care and assumes broader responsibility across the patient journey. Credibility and trusted relationships with government, Ontario Health, physicians, unions, the University of Toronto, health system partners, the Sunnybrook Foundation, donors and communities will therefore be indispensable. An astute convener and persuasive ambassador, the next CEO will need to align diverse interests, exercise influence in environments where authority is shared and ensure that Sunnybrook contributes meaningfully to the policies and decisions shaping health care across Ontario.

Invent 2030 provides a strong foundation for the journey ahead, bringing together personalized and precise treatments, integrated care, quality and patient experience, and thriving people and teams.

Research, education, digital transformation and significant campus renewal, including the envisioned Critical Care Centre, will further shape the mandate. Rather than advancing these priorities in isolation, the next President and CEO will be expected to integrate them into a coherent vision for Sunnybrook’s future, accelerating discovery into practice, translating investment into greater capacity and ensuring that strategic ambition produces meaningful benefit for patients and the broader health system.

Equally important will be the stewardship of Sunnybrook’s distinctive culture. Its next leader will inherit an organization characterized by intellectual vitality, institutional pride and a profound commitment to purpose. Preserving those qualities while enabling necessary change will require discernment, courage and humility. Sunnybrook needs a leader people will choose to follow, someone who combines strategic ambition with authenticity and empathy, develops exceptional leaders, welcomes thoughtful challenge and possesses the resolve to make difficult decisions while sustaining the trust and collegiality that have long distinguished the organization.

Building on exceptional strengths in care, discovery, academic leadership and people, Sunnybrook’s next President and Chief Executive Officer will have the opportunity to guide an extraordinary institution through a period of significant possibility and change. With clarity of purpose and confidence in what Sunnybrook can become, the next leader will help extend its influence, strengthen its contribution to Ontario’s health system and ensure that Sunnybrook continues to be there for patients and families when it matters most.
